Scope/Nature
Rapid expansion of provision of education was needed at Apex High School, while the quest was to innovate by introducing blended learning. Afri. Can designed, built and fitted a Computer Lab with a capacity of 100 learners. This had to be a state of the art education space to lead the way in blended learning, where three teachers would instruct 100 learners with an online curriculum. The brief was to create a permanent facility with good sound, fire and thermic insulation, but with the option to relocate the whole structure and redeploy it elsewhere should the need develop in future. The building is made of textured precast concrete panels, containing organic fibers. The space includes ample natural lighting to give it a learning friendly studio atmosphere and sufficient air conditioning. The lab was fitted with an educator's stage and all custom designed furniture and ducting for the computer stations. As the project was done at an existing school during exam time, the brief was to complete as much of the project off-site and to minimize the activities and time of on-site deployment. Furthermore, the project had to be completed over the festive season, foundations were dug in November and the computer lab had to be operational by January, ready for the Western Cape Minister of Education to cut the ribbon.
